New York appointed its first-ever Korean American female judge on Thursday.

Kathryn S. Paek, 45, was one of the three candidates nominated for Criminal Court judgeships by Mayor Bill de Blasio, according to the Korea Times. She was approved in a public hearing held by the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on the Judiciary at the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings on Feb. 12. She will begin her term on Friday.

Paek, who immigrated to the States in 1974 at the age of 4, told the Korea Times that she plans to take her duties with responsibility and will work hard in being a good role model for second and third-generation Korean Americans practicing law.

In addition to being New York’s first Korean American female judge, Paek is now the state’s fourth Korean American judge.
