Top Dark Chocolate Bars: Our Taste Test Results

We sampled a variety of dark chocolate bars from brands such as Alter Eco, Pascha, and Raaka to find the best options for dark chocolate lovers. Here’s what we discovered after taste-testing and consulting with a nutrition expert.

If you’re reading this, you probably already know how delightful dark chocolate can be. Its higher percentage of cacao is what makes it so irresistible, contributing to some of our favorite chocolate-based desserts, like dark chocolate vanilla cookies or molten chocolate cake. However, you don’t always need to go through the effort of baking when a simple, high-quality chocolate bar can satisfy your cravings.

With a vast array of options available, finding truly exceptional dark chocolate can be a challenge. That’s why we recently conducted a taste test featuring 15 of the most popular dark chocolate bars on the market. After sampling, we narrowed the list down to ten standout bars, each containing at least 70% cacao. Surprisingly, many of these high-quality options come at a reasonable price, comparable to your usual coffee shop order.

Amano Artisan Chocolate Dos Rios Dark Chocolate Bar

At $10 for a 3-ounce bar, this option might not be the most affordable, but it was one of the clear winners in our taste test. The cacao in this bar is sourced entirely from the Dominican Republic, resulting in a chocolate with a distinct sense of origin. The fragrance is remarkably aromatic, and the flavor offers bright, fruity, and intensely floral notes. The finish is pleasantly bitter, with a hint of citrus peel that gives it a sophisticated edge.

Divine Dark Chocolate Bar

For those who prefer their chocolate on the more intense side, the Divine Dark Chocolate Bar contains 85% cacao. With its deep brown color and glossy finish, this bar is as visually appealing as it is flavorful. It strikes a perfect balance between earthy and fruity aromas, offering a well-rounded profile that can appeal to a wide audience. However, it might not be ideal for fans of sweeter, milk-based chocolate.

K’UL Pure Dark Chocolate Bar

This bar features a rich, classic brown color and a moderate gloss, making it visually inviting. The scent is more subdued than expected for an 80% cacao bar, but still offers unique notes reminiscent of beer-related aromas like hops, malt, and yeast. Its texture is firm, producing a distinct snap when broken. While mild in scent, this bar delivers a bold, enjoyable flavor.

K+M Hacienda Victoria Ecuador Chocolate

K+M Chocolate is the result of a collaboration between renowned chef Thomas Keller and olive oil producer Armando Manni. This 85% cacao bar, sourced from Ecuador, stands out for its luxurious appearance, with its dark, velvety, and glossy surface. The aroma leans toward earthy notes, adding to its rich, indulgent appeal. The combination of Keller’s expertise and Manni’s craftsmanship results in a premium chocolate experience.

For those with dietary restrictions or food sensitivities, the Pascha Organic 85% Cacao Dark Chocolate Bar is a fantastic option. It’s certified free of the top eight allergens, including soy and tree nuts, and is made without emulsifiers, making it one of the safest choices for allergy-conscious consumers. Despite its allergen-free status, the flavor doesn’t disappoint. This bar has a deep, nutty brown color and a consistent gloss, offering a five-star tasting experience. Its texture and flavor profile are on par with some of the best dark chocolates on the market
